While the Dales Way, the Coast-to-Coast or any number of walks in southern England pride themselves on glorious views, occasional sunny days and the chummy feeling of being one of the club when you walk the route, the Pennine Way is covered in peat bogs, continual rain and other walkers can be very scarce on the later stretches - having been scared off by the nightmarish first day's route.
Which is of course why the stubborn, unsocial poet Simon Armitage decided in 2010 to walk the route backwards with no money whatsoever as he tried to pay his way with poetry readings where he passed a walking sock round for donations... Continue reading ![]()
